Most of the restaurants and other attractions are in town, 2 miles away. But there are a number of things to see and do within easy walking distance of the airport parking apron.

The closest is the Gateway Park and Gateway to Discovery Coastal Natural History Center, just a few hundred feet south of the airport on the west side of highway 101. The park has a nice walking trail that borders the lovely Necanicum river estuary, and the natural history center is full of information and a great place to begin your explorations of the north Oregon coast. While you're there you can grab a cup of joe at Java Reef Espresso, right next to the natural history center.

Just a little further south is the Creekside Pizzeria. It's more than a pizza place, they also have some great broasted chicken and other family fare. Call first for hours of operation -- they're not open on Sundays in the off-season.

Welcome to Cannon Beach

If you're up for a pleasant 1 mile walk and some unique, lovingly prepared food at an intimate, cozy cafe', try the Pacific Way Cafe and Bakery, in the center of Gearhart. To get there from the airport, cross the highway and walk north about 100 yards to G street. Turn left (west) and follow G as it jogs right and becomes Neacoxie, then F street. When you get to Cottage, turn right (north), and go a few blocks to the four way stop in the center of town. The Cafe' is on the southwest corner of Cottage and Pacific Way. Open Thu-Mon, 7:30 a.m. - 9:00 p.m.

The walk into Seaside is a little more ambitious, but a pleasant one nonetheless, and those who make the trek will be rewarded with a wide choice of restaurants, shops, hotels, arcades, and everything else you could expect from a coastal town. And of course there's the beach! Distance is about 2.25 miles, and the key to an enjoyable walk is to get off the highway and take the back roads. From the airport road, highway 101 south, crossing to the west side sometime at or before the bridge that crosses the Necanicum river (about 1/4 mile from the airport). Just on the other side of the bridge, turn right (west) onto 24th avenue. 24th shortly curves southward and becomes Holladay Drive. Follow Holladay past the high school and the river estuary overlook to 12th avenue. Rent a bike or Surrey at the Prom Bike Shop at the corner of 12th and Holladay, or continue walking south towards Broadway. As you approach 9th street, stop in at the Seaside International Hostel, where you can rent a canoe or kayak, grab a latte, or spend the night in a top-rated international hostel. Continue south and you'll shortly come to Broadway, the main east-west street which terminates at the famous beach-front Turnaround. A nice alternative is to take Holladay only as far as 12th avenue, turn right (west) on 12h and take it all the way to the oceanfront Promenade. Follow the "Prom" the rest of the way south to the Turnaround (Broadway) right on the shore.

There are plenty of restaurants in downtown Seaside, and it's hard to pick out any one to recommend. But two seafood places that have a loyal following (and frequently a line out the door) are Norma's Ocean Diner, at 20 North Columbia (1 block north of Broadway), and Doogers Seafood & Grill, at 505 Broadway. Some great "earthy" fare, including wonderful lattes and cappucinos can be found at Morning Star Cafe', 846 Avenue C (two blocks south of Broadway on Highway 101). Further to walk, but a favorite of the locals, is Corpenny's, at Avenue U and Beach Drive. To find it, take the "Prom" all the way to its southern end at avenue U (about 3/4 mile from the center of town), then go left (east) one block.

Other suggested attractions include the Seaside Aquarium and the Seaside Museum and Historical Society.
